The Bar Pro Bono Unit is a charity which helps to find pro bono (free) legal assistance from volunteer barristers.

We can assist with:

  • advice, representation and help at mediation
  • cases in all legal areas
  • cases where proceedings have not yet been started
  • cases in all tribunals and courts in England and Wales

Pro bono assistance is only available to those who cannot afford to pay and who cannot obtain public funding (Legal Aid).

For examples of the types of case in which the Unit can give assistance, please visit the case examples page.

For additional introductory information about the Unit, please visit the overview page.

"I'm so grateful the Bar Pro Bono Unit exists and even more grateful I have met lawyers who work through it with such generosity of spirit that our faith in mankind is once again restored."
