There are many ways in which individuals who are undertaking legal training or who have completed their courses but are not yet qualified lawyers can assist the community. Bar Pro Bono Unit (London) We are currently recruiting Academic Interns; More details can be found on the noticeboard.
Bar in the Community (Nationwide)
Part of the Bar Pro Bono Unit, this project offers a range of board level volunteering opportunities with a wide range of charities.
The Free Representation Unit (London)
Take law students on as volunteers to provide legal advice, case preparation and advocacy in tribunal cases for those who could not otherwise obtain legal support, for want of personal means or public funding.
LawWorks and Student Pro Bono (Nationwide)
Are involved in a wide variety of projects and have set up a student pro bono website.
Citizens Advice Bureau (Nationwide)
The Citizens Advice service helps people solve their legal, consumer and other problems by providing free advice, and by influencing policymakers. Vacancies vary but they take volunteers on for advisory roles and management committee roles (for the latter please see Bar in the Community above).
Victim Support (Nationwide)
Assist in supporting victims and witnesses both in the community and at court. Volunteers undertake a wide variety of tasks from helping witnesses in court, to answering calls to the Victim Supportline and more.
Amicus (London and USA)
Amicus is a charitable organisation which provides legal assistance to inmates on death row in the USA. They have a membership scheme and offer internships.
Environmental Law Foundation (Nationwide)
The Environmental Law Foundation (ELF) is the national UK charity founded in 1992 that helps people use the law to protect and improve their local environment and quality of life. They have a number of volunteering opportunities in London and elsewhere.
A4ID (Advocates for International Development) (London based)
A4ID facilitates free legal assistance on an international basis in particular to support the achievment of the UN Millenium Development Goals. They have a membership scheme and offer internships.
