What kind of project is this?

LawCare is a free and completely confidential advisory service to help lawyers, their immediate family and their staff to deal with the health issues and related emotional difficulties that can result from a stressful career in law.

They offer support initially through free helplines where the caller will be connected to a LawCare staff member who will help identify the nature and extent of their problem. The individual may then be offered a referral to a relevant health professional and/or support of a lawyer volunteer.

What does the role involve?
Barristers, solicitors and legal executives are needed to lend a sympathetic ear to others in the profession. You would be offering one to one support (usually over the telephone) for individuals who have been referred from the LawCare helpline.

The amount of support an individual will need can vary hugely; some feel better after only a short conversation, others will need to be called every other day for a number of months.

It is helpful, but not essential, for volunteers to have some basic knowledge of counselling skills and/or to have recovered from an impairment themselves such as clinical depression or an addiction or have close experience of such situations.

The identities of volunteers are kept strictly confidential and no referral occurs without prior consultation.

Where?

Volunteers are needed in every region of England and Wales
