Who is this organisation?

SignHealth is a national organisation that works to improve healthcare and achieve equal access for deaf people. They work with the deaf community, health services and other charities. Their vision is a world where there are no barriers to good health and wellbeing for deaf people. They offer high quality service which is personalised to cater to the needs of each client. 

Type of volunteer role

SignHealth are looking for a Chair of Trustees.

What Skills and Experience are they looking for?

The Chair will be sufficiently competent and skilful to shape and influence the effectiveness of the Board’s decision-making capacity.  This will be evident in leadership qualities, efficient communications, maintaining a balance on the Board that is energised and able to deal with all issues arising on the agenda, encouraging full engagement of the Board, both executive and non-executive, and maximising the whole team’s potential.  The qualities of an outstanding Chair include being able to stand back while overseeing the organisation and being responsive to demands and obligations.

The Chair, as a Non-Executive, will be challenged to bring to the Board the most senior, independent and external view of business and charitable performance.  Through professionalism and a likely network of personal contacts, the Chair brings expertise that adds strands of knowledge and skills to the strategic decision-making processes of the Board.  The Chair is especially positioned to develop and maintain the highest standards of governance for sustaining a viable and successful organisation.

Knowledge and Experience

Qualified by experience, likely to have been gained at senior organisational level.  A relevant knowledge of the charity or disability sector or related industry, supported by experience or professional training or membership of a recognised professional qualification or ownership of a similar qualification appropriate to the role which could include housing, accountancy, legal, medical, social care or other similar profession.  Willingness to learn about deafness and its impact on people’s health.

How often are meetings held?

1 morning and 3 afternoons in March, June, September and December.

When and where are the meetings?

Generally held in London and Beaconsfield. Occasionally in Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester.
