Amicus is a charity that assists those representing impoverished people facing execution in theUnited States. They offer legal and humanitarian assistance by placing individuals in capital defence offices throughout theUnited States.
The charity provides a training programme addressing practical and theoretical skills to assist defence counsel with the representation of those facing execution in theUS. The course is a fascinating insight into the administration of the death penalty in theUSA.
Speakers included:
- Sunny Jacobs, exonerated former death row inmate. Sunny spent 5 years on death row and a further 12 in prison before being freed. Her husband was executed for the same crime.
- Peter Pringle, was wrongly accused, tried, convicted and sentenced to death for capital murder in Ireland. He served almost 15 years in prison for a murder he did not commit.
- Members of Murder Victims' Families for Human Rights, an organisation that represents the relatives of victims of homicide who do not want the perbitrator executed.
- Professor Julian Killingley, expert on the administration of the death penalty in the United States.
- Mark George QC, capital trial litigator.
