We depend on the hard work of all of our volunteers to deliver help to those who need legal assistance, but who through lack of resources are unable to obtain it. Each year we assist in many cases throughout the country where, but for the time and effort given pro bono, very different results might have been seen in a case.
The volunteers who take on cases are mainly barristers practising across England and Wales, and covering all legal areas at all levels of seniority. The Unit has a pre-registered panel of barristers, and also relies on those who are not on the panel to assist us where a case arises in the area of law they specialise in.
We rely strongly on clerks throughout the country to assist the work of the Unit, helping us to place cases with Counsel. We can only help with finding a solicitor in exceptional cases and we have a number of solicitor volunteers who are prepared to work alongside Counsel in those cases. We also have administrative volunteers who assist us from time to time in the office.
If you are considering volunteering, you may find it useful to read the overview page first, which gives an outline of the Unit and its work.
