Head of Casework

The Head of Casework is a senior leadership position with responsibility for the operations of the Unit’s core charitable function – to match those in need of legal help with volunteer barristers. This is a varied role within a fast paced and busy team. We are looking for someone who is flexible and positive, with a self-starter attitude and a readiness to engage with all aspects of the organisation.

Caseworker (Wed / Thu / Fri)

An opportunity exists for a determined, organised and enthusiastic individual to join the casework team. Previous experience assisting vulnerable people and scrupulous attention to detail are a must as you will liaise with pre-volunteered panel of almost 3,800 barristers, clerks and other stakeholders on a daily basis. This is a part-time role (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) on a fixed-term basis for 18 months.

Office Volunteering

 Summer Casework Volunteers at the Bar Pro Bono Unit

 June – September 2018

  • The Bar Pro Bono Unit is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to volunteer as Summer Casework Volunteers at the National Pro Bono Centre in London. The Casework Volunteer position is for one month between June – September 2018.
  • This Casework Volunteer position is a fantastic opportunity to obtain unique exposure to the Bar as a profession and to a wide range of areas of law. You will also learn a great deal about the needs of litigants in person.

The role

 You will assist Caseworkers for one month with the following tasks:

  • summarising applications ready for Reviewing Barristers
  • taking phone call enquiries from members of public
  • completing case reports
  • allocating cases and writing summaries which are sent to volunteer Barristers across England and Wales and placed on our members website
  • administrative support

"I would strongly recommend to anyone interested in pursuing a legal career to try and spend some time with the BPBU. It helps you hone crucial skills such as succinctly summarising the key facts of a case and identifying the relevant legal issues, something that should stand you in good stead for any pupillage or training contract interviews. The staff are all wonderfully welcoming and helpful, and whilst a key benefit is the range of areas you will experience (anything from Defamation to Child Protection). Ultimately you are doing genuinely important work that makes a material difference to people's lives."

Requirements

  • You must have completed at least one year of law-related study or have one-year experience of law-related work experience. Voluntary sector and office experience is preferred but not essential.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed at our offices from 14 – 18 May 2018. The interview will include a written assessment.
  • You must be available for one month between June – September 2018. The available 4-week slots are:           

4 June – 29 June 

2 July – 27 July

30 July – 31 August

3 Sept – 28 Sept
